Pauline is the first novel of Alexandre Dumas; it is also one of his least well-known novels. Perfect for the ‘‘lllustres Inconnus’’ collection by Beta Publisher, which aims to republish forgotten pieces from famous authors. Every publication from the ‘‘Illustres Inconnus’’ is illustrated, and I had the great honor to be the illustrator of Pauline, a gothic novel feminist ahead of its time. The pictures had to be in black and white, so I opted for a very contrasted aesthetic, without gray nuances, to underline the tension and the suspense that crossed the story.
I also illustrated the cover of this volume by following the graphic charter of the series: flat design, geometrical shapes creating link to the novel’s plot, and bright colors.
